Skin Cancer Awareness

Be sun smart at Duff Street Medical

With the warmer months approaching it’s important to know how to keep your skin protected.

Australia has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before they are 70 and unfortunately around 2000 people die from it each year. Sadly skin cancer death rates in Victoria are 1.5 times higher than road toll deaths.

If caught early it can be successfully treated, which is why it’s important to know your body and if you see new spots pop up its important to see your GP immediately

Things to look out for:

  • any crusty, non-healing sores
  • small lumps that are red, pale or pearly in colour
  • new spots, freckles or any moles changing in colour, thickness or shape over a few weeks to months (especially those dark brown to black, red or blue-black in colour).

Duff Street is a bulk billing centre that offers full body mole checks.

We have specialising doctors with certificates in Skin Cancer, Dermoscopy and Dermatology. They use the most advanced dermoscope system to ensure accurate and precise information.

They will closely examine the moles with the dermoscope. This instrument will magnify and light up the skin which helps the doctor to see through the skin and tell if any mole or spot in unusual or abnormal. If need be the mole will get biopsied. Results usually come within 48 hours.

There is a cost to this service. All patients who hold a healthcare card will be charged $100 and those without $120. This cost also covers the review afterwards.
